At it's base simplicity, the Despoiler is a Rhinodon with a slightly better chance to hit. It of course brings more to the table than that, but as far as stats are concerned, that's where we start off.
In order to make an additional three points, there would have to be considerable advantage to taking it. Especially since it is considered to be pillow-fisted outside of everything but under Mordikaar's control. Moridkaar aside however, let's consider the viability of the Despoiler in a list.
At first glance, the first thing that comes to mind is that I wouldn't consider this beast at its full point cost, with the assumption that I should be guaranteed to get at least one 'void spirit'. Assuming that this holds true, then thinking of it at a point cost 2 points lower makes it more tempting to put into a list. Especially since it mentions nothing about not being able to activate that void spirit that round. It reminds me of crucial moments in a Zaal list when the opponent takes out an Ancestral and raises and eyebrow about a forgotten Kovaas that would break open in its place near the end of their turns activation. Except this provides us with better control since it is not on an opponents activation, but on ours.
It has traded an animus that doesn't get much use, to one that can be painful for upkeeps and even a basic spell that would want to be used at a critical time (such as telekenisis nearby). This could make a difference with upfront warlocks who want to be upfield and providing a bubble of their own during a domination turn as well.
We do have Aptimus for potential free upkeeps, but having another option is always a benefit and I've always enjoyed Admonia in the Withershadow Combine for the same reason. So I won't be forgetting much about those upkeeps for free either. The eyeless sight makes thoughts of channeling through a Despoiler tempting instead of the wurm if desiring a bit more than a running sacrificial node.
In the end though, what can we say about its position on the field. It won't take out heavies without some serious aide just like its Rhinodon brethren and without 'thresher' it won't take out infantry as well either. It needs to find itself in a situation where it can make a void every round, while remaining somewhat safe and interfering with enemy plans with arcane suppression and supporting a friendly warlock's upkeep with 'black arts'. It will be an odd piece on the field. I'll certainly give it some consideration and some playtesting. Just not sure whether it's role will make sense in many lists.
